Avec le Hobbit et le Seigneur des Anneaux, l´écrivain britannique Tolkien a créé un monde imaginaire inspiré de nombreuses légendes païennes, dans lequel vivent elfes, trolls et dragons. Pourtant, ce fervent catholique a toujours revendiqué la dimension évangélique et missionnaire de son œuvre. Il écrira à son ami le père Murray : « Le Seigneur des Anneaux est une œuvre fondamentalement religieuse et catholique, elle l´était inconsciemment au début, mais consciemment dans sa révision ». Cette dimension religieuse reste cependant difficile à percevoir et de nombreux lecteurs et fans n'en ont pas conscience.
Comment Tolkien a fait du Seigneur des Anneaux une œuvre chrétienne et missionnaire ? Qu'est-ce que cette dimension catholique nous apprend de cette œuvre ? D'Oxford à Assise en passant par les tranchées de la Somme, ce documentaire mène une enquête à la fois littéraire et biographique pour comprendre le sens chrétien de cette saga fantastique.
